Indiana Fever's Playoff Hopes Dwindle Amid Injury Crisis
20 Aug
Summary
- Rookie star Caitlin Clark out for over a month with groin injury
- Two more guards, Colson and McDonald, suffer season-ending injuries
- Fever face toughest remaining schedule in the league

As of August 20th, 2025, the Indiana Fever find themselves in a precarious position, with their playoff aspirations hanging in the balance. The team, once pegged as potential title contenders during the offseason, has endured a turbulent campaign marked by a relentless wave of injuries, controversies, and uncertainty.
With fewer than 10 games left in the regular season, the Fever sit at 19-16, trailing the fourth seed by 2.5 games. However, they also have four teams breathing down their neck, all within three games or less. The team's woes began with the loss of rookie phenom Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined for over a month due to a groin injury. Despite this setback, the Fever have managed an 11-11 split without their star player.
The backcourt setbacks didn't end there. In the wake of Clark's absence, the Fever saw two more guards, veteran Sydney Colson and fan-favorite Aari McDonald, go down during a blowout loss to the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month. Colson tore her ACL, while McDonald suffered a fractured bone in her right foot. To add to their troubles, the team announced on Tuesday that guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the season with a torn MCL.

The Fever's rash of injuries couldn't have come at a worse time, as they face the toughest remaining schedule in the league. They still have three games against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx, plus matchups with the Phoenix Mercury, Golden State Valkyries, and Seattle Storm. Meanwhile, the teams chasing them, the Valkyries, Storm, LA Sparks, and Washington Mystics, face lighter paths.
Even without Clark, the Fever can lean on All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. However, Clark's scoring punch, playmaking, and gravity against defenses elevate the Fever into a different tier. Coach Stephanie White remains hopeful that Clark could return before the regular season wraps up, but she has stressed that the team won't rush their star player's recovery.
