India Star Shubman Gill to Miss Duleep Trophy Due to Illness, Ankit Kumar to Lead
23 Aug
Summary
- Shubman Gill likely to miss upcoming Duleep Trophy
- Gill appointed captain of North Zone side, but will not play full tournament
- Ankit Kumar to lead North Zone in Gill's absence

According to reports, India's star opener Shubman Gill is likely to miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which is scheduled to begin in Bengaluru later this week. Gill, who had been appointed captain of the North Zone side, is reportedly unwell and may not be able to participate in the tournament.
Even if Gill were to recover in time, he would not have been able to play the full Duleep Trophy, as his national duties for the Asia Cup, starting on September 9 in the UAE, would have taken precedence. The Duleep Trophy runs from August 28 to September 15, and Gill's participation would have been restricted to only the opening fixture.
With Gill's absence now certain, vice-captain Ankit Kumar will lead the North Zone team in the Duleep Trophy. Gill had returned earlier this month from a prolific tour of England, where he amassed 754 runs in five Tests. His impressive form earned him a place in India's Twenty20 squad for the Asia Cup, where he has also been named vice-captain.
