Miami RedHawks' rising sophomore Ilia Morozov has been drafted 20th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft. This historic selection marks him as the highest NHL draft pick to ever come from Miami University, exceeding Tyler Biggs' previous record. Morozov, a 17-year-old from Moscow, was a key center for the RedHawks during the 2025-26 season, contributing eight goals and 12 assists.
Despite being drafted, Morozov is expected to return to Miami for his sophomore season. NHL draftees are not obligated to sign with their teams immediately. His decision to continue his NCAA career is aimed at gaining further experience, with the decision to turn professional to be evaluated annually.
The Sabres, who won the Atlantic Division in the 2025-26 season, also drafted Daxon Rudolph with the No. 4 overall pick. Morozov previously moved from Russia to Illinois at age 14 and played for various AAA and USHL teams before being recruited to Miami by head coach Anthony Noreen.
Morozov, standing at 6-3 and 200 pounds, is noted for his physicality, offensive and defensive skills, and effectiveness on the penalty kill. He was the second-youngest NCAA men's hockey player last season and will celebrate his 18th birthday on August 3rd.
