Summary
- ODI World Cup expands to a four-stage structure.
- New opening round to feature lower-ranked teams.
- Revamped format aims to boost competitiveness and narrative.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a significant restructuring of its flagship men's ODI World Cup. The reforms are designed to enhance the tournament's competitiveness and narrative throughout. The new format will feature four distinct stages, beginning with an opening Super Series round. This initial phase will involve the 12th, 13th, and 14th ranked teams, with only one earning a qualification spot.
The qualifying team will then join the top 11 ranked nations in two groups of six. The top three teams from each group, plus the next best-ranked side, will advance to a seven-team Super 7 round-robin stage. This central phase of the tournament is intended to create more high-stakes encounters between elite sides. Ultimately, the top four teams from the Super 7 will progress to the semifinals and then the final.
