Summary
- Cornell Hatcher Jr. boasts 4.47 speed, ran for 93 yards and a TD against Houston.
- Takari Hickle recorded two sacks and five tackles for loss last year.

Houston enters Saturday's Week 1 game against Oregon State as a significant favorite, but must avoid complacency. The Cougars barely escaped a 27-24 thriller in their last meeting in Corvallis. Despite roster changes, Oregon State returns impactful players and adds transfers who could influence the game.
Key Oregon State players demand Houston's attention. Running back Cornell Hatcher Jr., with 4.47 speed, is the lead back after Anthony Hankerson's departure. Hatcher previously rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown against Houston, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. He is expected to carry a heavy load.
EDGE/Outside Linebacker Takari Hickle, though quiet against Houston last year, recorded two sacks and five tackles for loss among his 38 total tackles. His improved conditioning and quick first step make him a constant threat on the edge, needing defensive attention.
Finally, Vanderbilt transfer AJ Newberry presents a red zone challenge. While his overall 2025 season was modest, he scored three touchdowns in 2024 and also found the end zone thrice last year. Newberry is a priority to stop near the goal line.
