Eighteen-year-old Parwati Topno, a defender for the India junior women's hockey team, recently clinched a Junior Asia Cup gold medal in China. However, her triumphant return to Kumhartoli village in Gumla was met with the disheartening reality of her family's damaged clay house. Heavy rains have caused leaks in the verandah, and the toilet facility is in a poor state.
The family faces irregular and insufficient drinking water supply from their household connection, relying mostly on a village hand pump. Parwati's father, a mason and sharecropper, has not received benefits from any housing schemes. He also experiences inconsistent work opportunities, alternating between masonry and sharecropping.
Parwati's hockey career began at a local center in Kamdara and progressed through residential training in Ranchi. She has participated in national tournaments and the Khelo India Youth Games. After receiving a Khelo India Scholarship and attending the Junior India camp in 2025, she made her international debut in practice matches before being selected for the Junior World Cup team the same year.
