Hamilton Fumes at Ferrari's Q3 Strategy Gamble

Lewis Hamilton voiced significant frustration following Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying, expressing dismay at Ferrari's Q3 strategy. Hamilton stated that the team altered their plan, opting for a single run late in the session rather than the multiple runs employed by competitors like Mercedes and Red Bull.

This tactical choice meant Hamilton lacked the crucial 'tow' effect from a car ahead on Baku's long main straight, impacting his straight-line speed. His teammate, Charles Leclerc, benefited from Hamilton's tow and secured a second-place starting position, qualifying behind dominant pole-sitter George Russell.

Hamilton acknowledged Mercedes' outright speed, particularly on the straights, noting that three of the top five grid slots were occupied by cars with Mercedes engines. He anticipates a challenging race trying to keep pace with and overtake these faster machines.

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur acknowledged the difficulty in synchronizing run plans for a tow on Lewis's side, and that Lewis brushed the wall on his first Q3 lap. Leclerc, despite the significant gap to pole, expressed optimism about Ferrari's race pace, believing the car performs better in race conditions than in qualifying. He hopes to score good points despite Baku's unpredictable nature, with low tyre degradation expected to make track position vital.
