Haas has announced a significant driver change, signing Ferrari development driver Rafael Câmara to a Formula 1 race seat beginning in 2027. Câmara, 21, is currently leading the Formula 2 standings in his debut season and is set to make his F1 debut next year. His signing comes after an impressive private test for Haas in August at Portugal's Portimão track, a performance that solidified his position as the lead candidate to replace Esteban Ocon.
Ayao Komatsu, Haas F1 team principal, praised Câmara's ability to not only display raw speed but also create an optimal environment for performance during the test. Câmara has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022 and has a strong junior racing pedigree, including winning the Formula Regional European Championship. He currently leads his F2 season by seven points with two rounds remaining.
Haas is optimistic about the upside of signing young talent like Câmara, citing the positive impact Ollie Bearman has had on the team. The team anticipates a commercial boost from Câmara's appeal to Brazilian sponsors. Câmara expressed excitement for the new challenge and is focused on preparing himself to understand the car and develop as a driver.
