Gymnasts Sue Over Abuse: "A Complete Failure"

Young gymnasts have shared harrowing experiences of developing eating disorders and depression due to the prevailing culture within the sport. A law firm is currently handling more than 40 active claims against British Gymnastics, highlighting the scale of the issue.

Survivors, like Laura (not her real name), describe a challenging and frustrating process with British Gymnastics' handling of abuse allegations. She received a five-figure payout after developing anorexia and bulimia from alleged bullying and intense weight pressure at just 12 years old.

Despite compensation in a civil case, Laura feels the Independent Complaints Process (ICP) failed her and many others. The ICP panel issued a warning to a lead coach regarding weighing practices, but not all allegations were upheld. Another gymnast, Nicole Pavier, also endured daily weigh-ins and developed serious eating disorders.

Pavier described her ICP experience as "horrific," noting the lack of support and inability to present corroborating witness statements. While two complaints about her coach were partially upheld, the coach was not deemed a safeguarding risk and thus cannot be publicly named.

Gymnasts For Change, a survivor-led charity, calls for greater transparency, citing "procedural incompetency and failures" in all cases they have encountered. Christopher Quinlan KC, who oversaw the case management of the ICP, stated that complaints were upheld and sanctions imposed on coaches, acknowledging concerns about why some panels did not uphold complaints.
