Romanian Gymnast Faces Ban Over Failed Tests
9 May
Summary
- Ana Barbosu provisionally suspended for missing three drug tests.
- The gymnast is appealing the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
- Barbosu previously had a bronze medal overturned due to judging controversy.

Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, 19, has been provisionally suspended by the International Testing Agency (ITA) due to three "whereabouts failures" within a 12-month period, meaning she missed three scheduled drug tests. Barbosu intends to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
She addressed the situation on social media, clarifying that the missed tests were due to her recent transition to attending college in the US at Stanford University and that no prohibited substances were involved. This suspension comes after a turbulent 2024 Paris Olympics, where Barbosu was initially awarded a bronze medal in the floor exercise.
However, a subsequent judging controversy and appeal process, which was later ruled to be improperly handled by the event's judging panel past the deadline, led to her medal being rescinded. The International Olympic Committee ultimately confirmed that the bronze medal, originally awarded to another athlete, was subject to improper judging.
