27 Oct
Summary
- Grassroots sports clubs struggle with soaring utility bills.
- Cost of living crisis puts adult players at risk.
- Flutter's Cash4Clubs offers £500,000 in grants.
Community sports clubs in Britain and Ireland are facing an unprecedented challenge to remain operational through the winter. Rising utility bills and the pervasive cost-of-living crisis have pushed many grassroots organisations to their limits, according to TV presenter Jill Douglas. She highlights that adult participants are particularly vulnerable to being overlooked.
Douglas, who is also a trustee for the sports charity Sported and president of Cheltenham Tigers RFC, is urging clubs to apply for grants from Flutter's £500,000 Cash4Clubs fund. This initiative, in partnership with Sported, aims to provide £2,000 grants to 225 clubs, with five receiving £10,000. The current focus is on sustaining adult engagement in sports, recognizing its vital role in providing friendship and a sense of belonging.
The grants are unrestricted, offering crucial flexibility for volunteer-led clubs to allocate funds where most needed. Douglas emphasized the importance of this flexibility, given the limited time and resources many volunteers have for complex application processes. Since its launch in 2008, Cash4Clubs has distributed over £7 million to community clubs across the UK and Ireland, supporting a diverse range of sports. Eligible non-profit clubs delivering adult sport can submit funding bids until January 1, 2027.
