Rays Draft Shock: Emerson Goes 2nd Overall

The Tampa Bay Rays selected shortstop Grady Emerson of Fort Worth Christian School with the second overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday. Emerson marks the first high school player to be chosen in this year's draft. He emerged as a top prospect as the summer approached, ultimately landing with the Rays, an organization recognized for its strong player development system.

Emerson concluded his high school career with an outstanding .532/.648/1.013 slash line, featuring seven home runs, 50 RBI, and 31 stolen bases. He was also a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, an honor rarely given to high school players. Emerson is considered the top pure hitter in the 2026 class, boasting advanced plate discipline and a strong offensive track record.

Widely recognized for his elite barrel control, strike-zone discipline, and all-fields contact, Emerson also displays developing power. His mature approach and bat-to-ball skills provide a high offensive floor, with his physical projection suggesting at least average future power. Defensively, he possesses the attributes to stay at shortstop, exhibiting reliable actions, soft hands, a strong arm, and excellent instincts. He is an above-average runner.

Emerson's journey includes being the first player to participate in multiple USA Baseball U-15 and U-18 national teams. He previously trained with mentor and Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and admired former Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. Emerson's power was also showcased at last year's high school home run derby at Truist Park.
