Andrea Phipps, a significant figure in the horse racing world and co-owner of this year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes champion Golden Tempo, died on Tuesday in New York City. She was 82 and succumbed to a short illness.
Phipps was the matriarch of Phipps Stable, which co-bred and co-owned Golden Tempo with St. Elias Stable. The filly, trained by Cherie DeVaux, achieved victory in two of the three Triple Crown races this year, with jockey Jose Ortiz at the reins.
Phipps Stable, a historic racing operation, recently celebrated its centennial anniversary. Over the decades, the stable has been associated with numerous successful racehorses, including the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb.
Golden Tempo secured the Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs. Connections then opted to bypass the Preakness Stakes, focusing instead on the Belmont Stakes, which the horse won on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course. The horse is expected to compete next in the Travers Stakes on August 29.
