Families Priced Out? Glasgow Games Ticket Shock
6 Jul
Summary
- Opening ceremony tickets cost £332 for a family of four.
- Most events exceed £300 for family tickets, unlike 2014.
- Organisers state prices start at £12, with free family events.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow face criticism for ticket prices that could exclude families. A family of four could pay £332 for the opening ceremony on July 23 and over £300 for athletics finals or swimming sessions. This contrasts sharply with the 2014 Glasgow Games, where two-thirds of tickets were £25 or less.
Scottish Labour's sport spokesperson urged organisers to make the Games more affordable for working families. However, Games organisers insist prices start at £12 for non-medal events, with boxing tickets available for £58. They also point to a free, family-friendly 'Game On Live Site' in Kelvingrove Park.
The Games were relocated to Glasgow after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to escalating costs. Glasgow's scaled-back event is budgeted at £114 million, largely funded by £100 million compensation from Australia. The UK Government has provided a contingency fund of up to £2.3 million.
