The expansion of women's flag football across high school, college, and professional levels is creating significant new opportunities for female athletes. As the sport prepares for its 2028 Olympic debut, its participation is rapidly increasing. Currently, 17 states have sanctioned girls' varsity flag championships, and an additional 22 states are running pilot programs.
The collegiate landscape is also evolving, with independent leagues like the NAIA and NJCAA already featuring flag football. In February, an NCAA committee recommended that all divisions add flag football as an emerging women's sport. The University of Saint Francis in Indiana became the first college there to offer it as a scholarship sport, playing its inaugural game in April 2024.
In Indiana, the sport has seen remarkable growth. The Indiana High School Athletic Association approved flag football as an emerging sport in May 2025. The Colts Girls High School Flag Football League, started in 2023 with eight teams, expanded to 27 teams in 2024, making girls' flag eligible for emerging sport status. By the summer of 2025, over 70 Indiana high schools had joined the movement, including several in Indianapolis. Penn High School secured the title of Indiana's first high school flag state champions in October, defeating Lawrence North.
Further demonstrating the sport's momentum, over 100 girls' flag teams have committed for the upcoming year, with sanctions expected soon. The NFL is also launching a new men's and women's flag football league backed by all 32 teams, aiming to expand the sport's reach and structure over the next few years. This development underscores the growing investment and excitement surrounding women's flag football.
