Skattebo Sees Red: Unpenalized Facemask Sparks Frustration

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo faced a frustrating encounter during the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. After a Cowboys defender appeared to twist his facemask, Skattebo left the field bleeding from the nose, visibly upset as no penalty was called by the referees. This incident occurred after Skattebo had already scored the Giants' first touchdown.

The uncalled penalty came at a critical moment, contributing to the Giants failing to convert a third down and leading to a punt. The Cowboys capitalized on the subsequent possession, scoring a touchdown to tie the game. This event adds to a challenging period for Skattebo, who is still recovering from a right ankle injury sustained in late October 2025, an injury that led him to consider retiring.

Coach John Harbaugh had previously advised Skattebo to channel his aggression constructively. Skattebo acknowledged his past "dumb things," like a failed backflip attempt at Fanatics Fest in July, stating he learned from his coach's feedback. Harbaugh's concerns also extended to Skattebo's overall risky play, evidenced by a 15-yard penalty at the end of a recent practice.

Despite these concerns and the competitive running back field including Najee Harris, Skattebo was chosen as the lead back by the Giants. However, the impact of the uncalled facemask incident seemed to disrupt his rhythm throughout the remainder of the game against Dallas.
