Whisenhunt experienced a sudden sharp pain in his elbow during his best start of the year on Monday, forcing him to leave the mound. The typical recovery for Tommy John surgery ranges from 12 to 16 months, meaning he likely won't return to a major league mound until well into the following season.

The team also provided an update on shortstop Willy Adames, who sustained a moderate sprain to his left elbow on Sunday.
