11 Mar
Summary
- Geno Smith is returning to the Jets after 13 years.
- A trade for Smith was agreed upon for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
- Smith restructured his contract with the Raiders paying most of his salary.

Thirteen years after selecting him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the New York Jets have reacquired quarterback Geno Smith. The trade, finalized on Tuesday, brings the 35-year-old veteran back to his original team. The Jets will receive Smith and a seventh-round pick from the Raiders in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round selection.
Smith reportedly agreed to restructure his contract for this move, with the Raiders absorbing a significant portion of his remaining salary. This alleviates much of the financial burden for the Jets. The Raiders were motivated to move Smith due to an $8 million contract guarantee due to become fully official on March 13, 2026.
Smith played his first four seasons with the Jets from 2013 to 2016, throwing for 5,962 yards and 28 touchdowns with 26 interceptions. He has since played for the New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and most recently, the Raiders. With the Raiders last season, he threw 15 touchdowns and a league-worst 17 interceptions in 15 starts, with the team holding a 2-13 record in those games. He was sacked a league-high 55 times.
