Ganguly Pushes for Shami Recall, Calls for India to Focus on Pitch Quality
17 Nov
Summary
- Ganguly suggests bringing back Shami to India's Test squad
- Wants India to focus on playing on good pitches, not just spin-friendly tracks
- Expresses concern over India playing too many "pitch-affected" games
As of November 17, 2025, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has openly criticized the team's Test strategy and selection following their 30-run loss to South Africa in Kolkata last month. Ganguly, who also served as BCCI President, has suggested that current head coach Gautam Gambhir should bring back experienced pacer Mohammed Shami into the squad.
Ganguly noted that Shami last played a Test during the 2023 World Test Championship, but has since taken 17 wickets in four domestic matches at an impressive average of 17.35. The former captain believes these numbers show Shami is ready for a return to the national team.
Ganguly has also expressed concern over India playing too many "pitch-affected" games, encouraging the team management to prepare fair surfaces instead of relying too heavily on spin-friendly tracks. He believes India should aim to win Tests over five days, not rush for quick results, and has pointed to England's recent success on true pitches as an example to follow.
With the next Test against South Africa starting in Guwahati on November 22, Ganguly's comments have put pressure on the selectors and coaching staff to rethink their team choices and pitch strategies if India wants to bounce back strongly.
