Did FSU Playoff Snub Doom Coach Norvell's Career?

Mike Norvell has been fired as Florida State's football coach, ending his nearly seven-season tenure with a 41-39 record. The author posits that Norvell's professional fate was sealed on December 3, 2023, when the College Football Playoff selection committee controversially omitted his undefeated Seminoles from the playoff. This decision, which left the 13-0 team out in favor of a one-loss Alabama, reportedly devastated Norvell and eroded his confidence, a sentiment echoed by the team's subsequent 10-23 record. The aftermath saw significant player opt-outs and transfers, culminating in a 63-3 bowl loss. Florida State's administration is criticized for a slow adaptation to the NIL era and transfer portal, a stark contrast to the rapidly evolving college football landscape. Despite investments and personnel changes, the team struggled with quarterback performance and overall coaching. An extension granted to Norvell after the 2023 season, which included a substantial buyout, highlights the difficult financial position the athletic department now faces. The university gave Norvell every opportunity to succeed, but a recent home loss to Clemson, amidst fan dissatisfaction, preceded his dismissal. While some argue Norvell's struggles stemmed from recruiting and player development, the lingering impact of the playoff snub and the perceived injustice of the situation are presented as critical factors in his downfall. Norvell leaves with substantial financial compensation but a tarnished reputation and the memory of a lost championship opportunity.
