Freediver Braves Mine-Strewn Strait of Hormuz

During heightened Iran-US tensions last Saturday, Indian freediver Bux Khurana undertook a perilous dive into the Strait of Hormuz. The waters, typically crowded with oil tankers, were eerily silent and remarkably clear, exhibiting a striking green hue unseen by Khurana in his previous 15 dives. He reported the presence of mines scattered across the strategic waterway, adding to the inherent risks of the dive.

Amidst the geopolitical instability and potential dangers, nature displayed a surprising resurgence. Khurana observed dolphins leaping and large flocks of flamingos, drawing comparisons to the quietude experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. This reduction in heavy maritime traffic had an unexpected positive impact on local fishermen, who found fishing easier in the calmer conditions.
