Florida AG Calls NFL's Rooney Rule 'Illegal'
26 Mar
Summary
- Florida AG claims the Rooney Rule violates state civil rights laws.
- The rule mandates interviews with minority candidates for key positions.
- A deadline of May 1, 2026, is set for NFL confirmation on rule enforcement.

Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has written to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell demanding the league abandon its Rooney Rule. Uthmeier asserts that the rule, implemented in 2003, constitutes illegal race and sex discrimination under Florida's Civil Rights Act. The rule mandates that NFL organizations interview at least two minority candidates for significant positions before making a hire.
Uthmeier stated that the rule forces teams to limit and classify applicants based on race and sex, thereby depriving individuals of employment opportunities. He referenced Troy Vincent Sr.'s acknowledgment that the NFL should foster a culture not dependent on mandates for interviewing minority candidates. The Attorney General has requested confirmation by May 1, 2026, that the NFL will cease enforcing the Rooney Rule or any variations thereof in Florida.
Failure to receive this confirmation may lead to a civil rights enforcement action against the league. This challenge arises amidst ongoing discrimination lawsuits against the NFL by former coaches like Brian Flores, who have alleged widespread racism in the league's hiring practices. As of publication, three NFL head coaches are Black, with no new Black head coaches hired this past offseason, though several coordinator positions were filled by minorities.
