Fletcher Stays Put: Not Joining Carrick's United Staff
13 Jan
Summary
- Darren Fletcher will not join Michael Carrick's coaching staff.
- Fletcher will return to manage Manchester United's Under-18 side.
- Carrick is set to become United's caretaker manager until season end.

Darren Fletcher will not transition to Michael Carrick's coaching staff at Manchester United, instead returning to his position as manager of the club's Under-18 team. Fletcher had previously been in a first-team coaching role and briefly managed the first team for two matches following Ruben Amorim's sacking earlier this month. His most recent matches were a draw at Burnley and an FA Cup exit against Brighton.
Fletcher's return to youth management precedes Carrick's imminent appointment as caretaker manager, a role he is expected to hold until the end of the current season. Carrick's agreement to take the position means his first fixture will be the Manchester derby on Saturday. The newly assembled backroom team under Carrick is anticipated to include Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion as assistants.
Further bolstering Carrick's support staff will be Jonathan Woodgate, who previously worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough from October 2022 until their departure at the end of last season. Steve Holland, formerly Gareth Southgate's assistant with England and having coached at Chelsea, is also set to join the club. Holland's last managerial role was at Yokohama F. Marinos, which concluded in April 2025.
