Fife Flyers Apologize for Pride Jersey U-Turn
2 Feb
Summary
- Team wore rainbow jerseys only during warm-ups, not the game.
- Charity refused donation and strip citing disappointment.
- Club apologized for hurt and disappointment caused by decision.

The UK's oldest ice hockey team, Fife Flyers, issued an apology following backlash over their decision regarding rainbow jerseys for Pride Night. The Kirkcaldy-based team stated their annual Pride Night aimed to celebrate diversity and inclusion. However, they announced the Pride-themed jerseys would only be worn during warm-ups to respect the personal beliefs of their players.
This decision meant the team competed in their standard home jerseys against the Guildford Flames, a match they lost 6-1. In previous years, the Flyers had worn custom rainbow jerseys for their Pride Night fixtures. The club's initial statement emphasized their commitment to inclusion remained unchanged.
The following day, the club apologized for the 'hurt and disappointment' their decision had caused. This apology came after local LGBTQ+ charity The Hive Kirkcaldy expressed extreme disappointment, stating they were not informed beforehand and refused all donations and the match-worn strip. Fife Pride also voiced anger, declaring that 'Pride is not a warm-up' and that such compromises undermine trust and send harmful messages.
