According to Rubio, a US senator, foreign nationals with tickets to World Cup matches could get visa interviews at US embassies or consulates within six to eight weeks of applying.
However, Rubio emphasized that a World Cup ticket does not guarantee admission to the US, as the same vetting process will apply to these applicants as it does for any other visa. The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted across North America, with the majority of matches taking place in the United States.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that up to 10 million visitors could come to the US to watch the World Cup matches. To accommodate these fans, Infantino said the "FIFA Pass" system will ensure that legitimate football fans can attend the tournament under the best conditions, including obtaining their visas.
The need for this expedited visa process is highlighted by the current long wait times for visa appointments in some countries. In Colombia, travelers are currently waiting around 11 months for a US visa interview, while the average wait time in Mexico City is 9.5 months. Non-Canadian citizens residing in Toronto can expect a 14-month wait for visa appointments.
If these wait times persist, the World Cup could be over by the time fans from certain countries receive their visas, potentially preventing them from attending the tournament.
