FIFA Eyes Massive 64-Team World Cup by 2030

FIFA is considering a substantial expansion of the World Cup, potentially increasing the number of participating teams to 64 as early as the 2030 tournament. This proposed change would dramatically reshape the competition's structure.

The most probable format for a 64-team World Cup involves 16 groups, each containing four nations. This would lead to a 32-team knockout stage, mirroring the final rounds of the previous 32-team format. Consequently, the total number of matches would significantly increase, potentially reaching 128 games, a considerable jump from the 64-game format used previously.

Such an expansion would have profound implications for team qualification. With over a third of FIFA's member nations potentially qualifying, traditional qualification campaigns could lose some of their significance. Regions like South America might see a vast majority of their teams automatically included in the finals.

Logistical challenges are also a major consideration. A 64-team tournament would require a longer duration, potentially exceeding a month, and necessitate more host cities and stadiums. This complexity is amplified by the 2030 World Cup's already multi-continental hosting plan across South America, Europe, and Africa.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino champions expansion as a means to foster greater global inclusivity and investment in football worldwide. However, opposition exists, particularly from European football leaders, who worry about a diluted tournament, less competitive group stages, and an already strained player calendar.
