Summary
- Fernando Tatis Jr. lost a lawsuit against Big League Advance.
- He must pay $3.2 million and legal fees immediately.
- The ruling means 10% of his future earnings go to BLA.

Fernando Tatis Jr. faced a major setback in court on Saturday, losing a significant lawsuit that will cost him millions. He had sued Big League Advance (BLA), alleging predatory tactics were used when he signed a contract with them in 2017 as an 18-year-old. Tatis claimed the company emphasized immediate financial aid while downplaying the long-term implications of the agreement.
A San Diego Superior Court judge dismissed Tatis's case, ruling that the Padres star must adhere to his original agreement. This means Tatis is obligated to pay BLA 10% of his future earnings. Immediately, he owes $3.2 million and $240,000 for Big League Advance's legal costs.
From his 14-year, $340 million contract with the San Diego Padres, 10% equates to $34 million. This obligation extends through the 2034 MLB season. Should Tatis sign another contract after becoming a free agent at 36, BLA would also receive 10% of those earnings.
Big League Advance provides upfront capital to minor league baseball players in exchange for a percentage of their future income, also offering professional support. The company states these agreements are investments, not loans, with payments contingent on professional earnings.
