Summary
- Shreyas Iyer's stellar IPL 2025 performance overlooked for Asia Cup
- Iyer's father expresses frustration over his son's omission
- Rahane calls for better communication from selectors on Iyer's non-selection

On August 19, 2025, the BCCI announced India's 20-member squad, including reserves, for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup. To the surprise of many, Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer was left out of the team despite his stellar performance in the recently concluded IPL 2025.
Leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the IPL 2025 final, Iyer amassed an impressive 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, registering six half-centuries. However, the 30-year-old was overlooked for the Asia Cup squad.
Reacting to the decision, Iyer's father, Santosh Iyer, expressed his frustration, saying he doesn't know what more his son needs to do to earn a place in the T20 side. Santosh Iyer emphasized Iyer's consistent performances for various IPL teams over the years, including captaining Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 and leading PBKS to the final this year.
Veteran Mumbai batter Ajinkya Rahane has also weighed in on Iyer's omission, stating that he can completely understand the team management's perspective in having to balance the squad. However, Rahane stressed the importance of proper communication from the selectors to Iyer, as he is an "important member of the team" and is likely to be part of the T20 format in the coming years.
The 2025 Asia Cup is scheduled to begin on September 9, with India placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Oman, and hosts the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
