F1 Drivers' Penalty Points: Who's on Thin Ice?
3 Dec
Summary
- The F1 penalty points system began in 2014 to address declining driver conduct.
- Last season saw the first driver ban due to accumulating 12 penalty points.
- Several drivers, including Magnussen, have faced penalties and bans.

Introduced in 2014, Formula 1's penalty points system aims to curb poor driving standards, which had become a concern in the early 2010s. The system assigns points for on-track transgressions, with a threshold designed to ensure accountability. Last season, this system resulted in its first-ever race ban when Kevin Magnussen amassed the maximum 12 points within a 12-month period.
As the current season nears its close, several drivers have managed to clear their penalty point accounts. Lando Norris and George Russell are among those with clean slates. Conversely, other drivers are facing increasing point totals. Oscar Piastri currently has six points, while Yuki Tsunoda stands at seven after a recent incident. Max Verstappen also has six points.
Concerns are rising for drivers like Ollie Bearman, who is perilously close to a ban with nine penalty points. Kimi Antonelli has five points following an incident, and Lance Stroll also holds five. Pierre Gasly has rejoined the penalized list, while Carlos Sainz now has two points after a successful review. Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon each have one point.
