Formula One's presence in Brazil is confirmed until 2035 with a new contract extension for the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo. The extended agreement, announced on Saturday, pushes the race's tenure by an additional five years beyond its previous commitment.
Interlagos, officially known as Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, has been a staple on the Formula One calendar since 1973 and currently serves as the sole South American venue. This historic track has witnessed pivotal moments in motorsport history, including legendary wins and championship deciders.
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed his delight, stating Brazil's integral role in the sport's past and future. He highlighted the exceptional passion of Brazilian fans and the vibrant energy felt at Interlagos. This announcement comes as Argentina actively pursues a return to the F1 calendar.
The new contract mandates substantial investments from Sao Paulo to improve the overall fan experience at the circuit. Mayor Ricardo Nunes emphasized the significant economic benefits the Grand Prix brings to the city, estimating the current event to generate approximately 2.3 billion reais for the local economy through various sectors.
This year's race also holds special significance for Brazilian fans with the presence of two Formula One drivers from the country on the grid, a first in a decade. The bolstered capacity at Interlagos, with an increase of 7,000 seats, saw tickets sell out rapidly, reflecting the immense popularity of the event.
