F1 Races To Get Shorter: New Distance Rule Starts 2027
22 Sep
Summary
- Grand Prix distance cut to 290km from 305km starting in 2027.
- Maximum three-hour race time limit removed, replaced by a two-hour racing limit.
- Gearbox homologation removed for 2027 to ensure development freedom.
Starting in 2027, Formula One Grand Prix races will adopt a reduced standard distance of 290 kilometers, down from the current 305 kilometers. This change, approved by the FIA's Formula One commission, will result in races being two to three laps shorter than before.
Further regulatory adjustments include the removal of the overall three-hour maximum time limit for races. While a two-hour limit for actual racing will be maintained, a new hard stop time will be introduced for events disrupted by factors like weather. This aims to ensure fans have a better opportunity to witness a full race duration.
Organizers will also benefit from increased flexibility in extending free practice sessions if they are interrupted. In a move to preserve development freedom for manufacturers, gearbox homologation requirements will be eliminated starting in 2027 following consultations with industry stakeholders.
