F1 Tweaks 2026 Rules to Aid Struggling Honda
8 May
Summary
- FIA adjusts 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations.
- New rules offer extra development opportunities for lagging manufacturers.
- First performance review for 2026 rules now after Canadian Grand Prix.

The FIA has implemented additional modifications to the 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations, designed to help manufacturers catch up. These changes are particularly anticipated to aid Honda, which has been on the back foot with its development, facing both uncompetitive performance and reliability issues.
The revised regulations include an enhanced ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) system. This system offers a tiered approach, providing greater cost cap allowances and dyno hours to manufacturers based on how far their engines lag behind the benchmark. Notably, the threshold for increased support has been lowered, and an additional $8 million allowance is available for this year only.
The timing of performance reviews has also been adjusted due to calendar changes. The first measurement point for the ADUO system will now occur after the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, with subsequent reviews in Hungary and Mexico. The FIA has stated that these review periods and performance measurement processes remain subject to change if deemed necessary.
