F1 2026: Boost Mode Replaces DRS!
18 Dec
Summary
- F1 cars will be narrower and lighter for 2026.
- New 'Boost Mode' replaces DRS for overtaking.
- FIA aims for 90% improved wake characteristics.

Formula 1 is ushering in a new era with significant technical regulations set for 2026. Cars will become slightly narrower and lighter, with a reduced minimum weight and wheelbase. The familiar Drag Reduction System (DRS) will be retired, replaced by 'Boost Mode,' which utilizes the hybrid power units to aid overtaking. This strategic shift is designed to improve close racing and enhance the on-track spectacle for fans.
The 2026 cars will feature active front and rear wings, working in conjunction to manage drag and downforce. The FIA anticipates a substantial reduction in drag by approximately 55 percent, while overall downforce will decrease by around 30 percent. This aerodynamic overhaul, coupled with new hybrid powertrains and the removal of the MGU-H, aims to make the cars more efficient and agile.
These sweeping changes are also proving successful in attracting new manufacturers like Audi and Cadillac, alongside renewed commitments from Honda and Ford. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasizes the sport's need for technical relevance, citing these new partnerships as a testament to its forward-looking strategy. The first preseason test is scheduled for January 26, with the season opener on March 6-8.
