Michael Hutchinson, who briefly played for the Detroit Red Wings organization during the 2023-24 season, has announced his retirement from professional hockey. This follows the recent retirement of another former Red Wings goaltender, Jack Campbell. Hutchinson's tenure with the Red Wings saw him appear in a single regular-season game in December 2023, where he made 33 saves in a losing effort.
Hutchinson's career included time with several NHL teams after being drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2008. He played from 2013 to 2018 with the Winnipeg Jets, posting a strong 21-10-5 record in the 2013-14 season. His journey also included stops with the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, and Columbus Blue Jackets.
After his NHL career, Hutchinson signed a professional tryout agreement with the Red Wings in 2023. Though released from the tryout, he accepted a similar deal with the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins and later signed a one-year contract. He spent his final professional season with SaiPa in the Finnish Liiga after being released from a PTO with the New Jersey Devils in the fall of 2024.
