Super Bowl Champ Becomes ER Doctor
4 Feb
Summary
- Laurent Duvernay-Tardif balances NFL career with medical degree.
- He served on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- He now works as an emergency medicine resident.

Super Bowl champion Laurent Duvernay-Tardif pursued a dual career, earning his medical degree in 2018 while playing for the Kansas City Chiefs. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned from celebrating a championship to working shifts in a long-term care facility. This experience profoundly shaped his perspective on patient care and humanity.
Duvernay-Tardif, now an emergency medicine resident, draws parallels between the teamwork and decision-making required in football and those in the ER. He recently completed a residency rotation in Gaspé, Quebec, gaining experience with acute patient management and transfers. He anticipates finishing his residency in emergency medicine within a year.
Beyond his medical and former NFL careers, Duvernay-Tardif co-founded a foundation supporting after-school programs that blend sports and arts for children in Quebec. This initiative, currently in 55 schools and expanding, aims to foster motivation and purpose. He also plans to cover the Olympics for Radio-Canada and has been recognized with several humanitarian awards.
