Ex-AFL Star Sues League Over Brain Damage
3 Feb
Summary
- Former player suing AFL for permanent brain damage after 2022 match.
- Allegations include memory loss, hearing loss, and suicidal thoughts.
- Lawsuit claims repeated head trauma was not properly managed.

A former dual-premiership forward is pursuing legal action against the AFL, AFL Northern Territory, and his former club, Nightcliff Tigers. The lawsuit stems from a head clash during a 2022 match that allegedly led to permanent brain damage, hearing loss, and suicidal thoughts. Court documents filed in the Northern Territory Supreme Court detail 'catastrophic injuries' that have devastated his health.
The now 33-year-old player claims the incident, which occurred on October 15, 2022, left him concussed and triggered a cascade of symptoms. These include post-concussion syndrome, chronic headaches, insomnia, memory loss, and significant financial impact due to reduced work capacity. The suit alleges that the defendants failed to properly manage his concussion history, despite up to seven diagnosed concussions and numerous sub-concussive blows throughout his career.
Melville argues that officials should have warned him of the risks of catastrophic injury and prevented him from playing while experiencing symptoms. The lawsuit asserts the AFL owed him a duty of care, including warning players about repetitive head injuries. This legal action adds to mounting pressure on the AFL regarding player safety and head injuries, following other high-profile cases and a class action lawsuit.
A directions hearing is scheduled in Darwin on March 18, 2026. None of the defendants have yet filed their defenses.
