Erjavec's Race Against Time: From China Final to Rome Qualifiers
3 May
Summary
- Veronika Erjavec reached a career-best WTA ranking after a final in Huizhou.
- She faces a tight travel schedule to compete in Rome qualifying.
- Erjavec's coach emphasized the difficult logistical trade-offs involved.

Slovenian tennis player Veronika Erjavec has reached a new career-best WTA ranking following her strong performance in the Huizhou final. This achievement, however, comes with a demanding travel schedule as she aims to compete in the Rome qualifying event. The finals match in Huizhou concluded with little time to spare before the Rome qualifiers commence on Monday.
Erjavec and her coach, Sašo Pistotnik, opted to remain in China to manage the final, despite the logistical difficulties. The nearest airport, Hangzhou, is two hours away, intensifying the race to reach Rome. Erjavec communicated her situation to the WTA, indicating her earliest possible arrival in Rome is Monday afternoon.
Pistotnik described the situation as a stressful trade-off, with no scenario free from pressure. This past September, Erjavec had success in China, winning consecutive tournaments in Changsha and Huizhou. She is also slated to participate in another WTA 125 tournament in Parma soon.
The immediate focus remains on navigating the tight turnaround from her career-best ranking achieved in Huizhou to her upcoming commitments in Rome.
