8 Oct
Summary
- Ella Toone earns surprise England call-up replacing injured Lucy Bronze.
- Wiegman previously omitted Toone due to unmet performance expectations.
- Toone joins teammates for World Cup qualifiers against Greece.
Manchester United forward Ella Toone has been surprisingly recalled to the England squad. This call-up comes as a replacement for Lucy Bronze, who has withdrawn due to an injury sustained during Chelsea's recent WSL victory. Toone's inclusion is timely as she joins her international colleagues for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup qualifiers.
The Lionesses are set to compete in a two-legged European play-off against Greece. The winners of this tie will then face either Slovakia or Ukraine to secure a spot in the World Cup. Toone's earlier omission from the squad was explained by manager Sarina Wiegman as a result of performance levels not meeting expectations, despite acknowledging the fierce competition for places.
