Elena Ritchey, a senior from Berlin Brothersvalley, announced on August 20, 2026, that she has verbally committed to play NCAA Division I softball for Youngstown State University. This decision marks a significant milestone for the talented pitcher, who will join coach Erin Pond's program.
Ritchey's journey to this Division I opportunity was marked by resilience. After undergoing arm surgery that caused her to miss the travel softball circuit following her sophomore year, she made a strong comeback. Competing with an Indiana Magic Gold National team this summer, Ritchey showcased her skills in tournaments across the country.
Her performance, especially against Power 4 recruits, led to scholarship offers. Ritchey has been recognized with numerous accolades, including three-time Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association first-team all-state selections. She is also a two-time Daily American Somerset County All-Star Softball Team Player of the Year and the 2026 Somerset all-county MVP. In her junior season, Ritchey batted .544 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs, while in the circle, she posted a 15-1 record with a 1.89 ERA, striking out 143 batters.
