A BMX track located on King George V Playing Fields in East Yorkshire remains accessible and in use, despite being officially closed to the public. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) previously assessed the site and deemed it unsafe, citing modifications made by users over the years that resulted in intersecting routes. Cottingham Parish Council indicated that rectifying these safety concerns would require significant realignment of the track.
The council has been seeking quotes from specialist contractors but cannot proceed with repair plans until a funding application decision is made by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Despite the closure, local residents, including Michelle Scholes, continue to bring their children to the track. Scholes defended the continued use, stating children are enjoying it together and looking after each other, and that the track appears to be in better condition than in recent years.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council's cabinet member, Nick Coultish, emphasized the importance of thorough due diligence given the funding request. He also noted that the proposed improvements are viewed as a positive investment, aiming to create an enhanced recreational facility for young people and the broader community.
