Dramatic Shakeup in FedEx Cup Playoffs as Top Names Eliminated

As of August 18th, 2025, the 2025 PGA Tour regular season has concluded, and the focus has shifted to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. However, this year's postseason is marked by a significant change in the format for the Tour Championship, which is set to take place in two weeks.

The field for the Tour Championship has been whittled down from 70 players to just 30, with several notable names no longer in contention. Golfers like Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, and Wyndham Clark have all been eliminated from the playoffs.

Despite the changes, a massive payday remains on the line. The FedEx Cup bonus pool has reached $100 million, with the winner of the Tour Championship set to take home a $10 million prize. Justin Rose and Scottie Scheffler have already claimed $3.6 million each from the earlier playoff events, leaving $80 million to be awarded at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship.

Scheffler, who missed the entire month of January due to injury, has emerged as the clear leader in the FedEx Cup standings, holding a 2,200-point advantage over third-place Sepp Straka. Rory McIlroy trails Scheffler by just under 1,400 points, setting up a potential showdown at the season finale.

The new format for the Tour Championship will see all 30 players start the tournament at even par, eliminating the staggered start that has been in place since 2019. This change is expected to create a more level playing field and potentially increase the excitement and drama of the season-ending event.
