D-backs Deal Urias to Blue Jays for Cash

The Arizona Diamondbacks have completed a trade, sending veteran utility infielder Luis Urias to the Toronto Blue Jays. This transaction, confirmed by MLB transaction logs, involved the exchange of Urias for a sum of cash. Urias had been with the Diamondbacks organization, playing for their Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces, during the 2026 season.

Urias, who is 29 years old, was initially signed to a minor league contract by Arizona before the 2026 season. After a brief stint on the injured list, he returned to play in affiliate games starting May 12. In 27 games for Reno, he demonstrated strong offensive performance, achieving a .361 batting average with a .939 OPS. He brings valuable experience, having played in parts of eight major league seasons with several clubs, including the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.

His ability to play shortstop, second base, and third base offers significant utility. This versatility is a key asset for the Blue Jays. However, the Diamondbacks' infield depth, both at the major league level and in their minor league system, made Urias expendable. This trade is not considered a major move for either team, as Urias was unlikely to see significant playing time with Arizona due to their existing roster.

Urias has been assigned to the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, to begin his tenure with the new organization. His most recent major league appearance was in 2025 with the Oakland Athletics, where he played 96 games before being designated for assignment.
