Summary
- Dhoni stopped intensive wicketkeeping practice after 8-9 years of international cricket
- Focused on quick reaction-based drills to keep his gloves lightning-fast
- Registered a staggering 829 dismissals in his illustrious career

According to former India fielding coach R Sridhar, legendary wicketkeeper MS Dhoni stopped practicing his wicketkeeping skills after playing 8-9 years of international cricket. Dhoni, who is still playing in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings at the age of 44, had a very effective yet unconventional wicketkeeping style that often defied textbook methods.
Despite this, Dhoni carved out a legacy as one of the finest wicketkeepers the game has ever seen, with a staggering 829 dismissals in his illustrious international career, comprising 634 catches and an unmatched 195 stumpings. Sridhar revealed that Dhoni openly acknowledged the need to manage his workload while featuring in all three formats, and to find the right balance, he reduced traditional wicketkeeping routines and shifted his focus towards quick reaction-based drills.
Dhoni's lightning-fast stumpings, unmatched presence behind the stumps, and ability to read the game made him one of the smartest cricketing brains. Even in the last IPL season, he claimed six catches and inflicted five stumpings, showcasing that he is not slowing down at the age of 44.
