Michigan State's standout goaltender, Trey Augustine, has officially signed with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. Announced on Tuesday, Augustine will first join the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins on an amateur tryout agreement for the remainder of the current season. His three-year entry-level contract with Detroit is set to commence with the 2026-27 season.
During his three years as the Spartans' primary goalie, Augustine achieved a remarkable 66-25-7 record, a .709 winning percentage. His performance saw consistent improvement, with his save percentage increasing from .915 as a freshman to .929 as a junior. This signing marks another significant player departure from Michigan State following their NCAA Tournament exit, with leading scorer Porter Martone also recently signing with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Augustine, originally committed to Michigan, flipped his commitment to Michigan State in September 2022. Detroit selected him 41st overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Michigan State has secured commitments for future goaltending, including Joshua Ravensbergen, a top prospect, and has Melvin Strahl, who served as backup this past season.
