Forcing Left? Avdija's Right-Hand Drives Defy Defenses

Defenses are intensifying their efforts to prevent Deni Avdija from utilizing his dominant right hand. This season, teams are employing more 'ice' coverage in pick-and-roll situations, aiming to funnel him towards his left. This strategy represents an increase from previous seasons, with higher rates of such coverage as the season progresses.

Despite defensive schemes designed to force him left, Avdija has developed effective counters. He demonstrates a strong ability to read defender positioning, using jab steps and attacking the defender's front foot to drive to his right hand. His relocation and catching the ball on the move also facilitate these right-handed drives.

Furthermore, Avdija's offensive approach makes him difficult to contain. By intentionally creating situations where he can drive right, even when defenses attempt to shade him left, he frequently draws contact and gets to the free-throw line. This tactic puts opponents in a difficult position, risking foul trouble for their key defenders and sending Avdija to the line.

Portland also utilizes off-ball actions to help Avdija operate.
