Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, has issued a clarification regarding remarks that suggested he would pay media members to cease coverage. Sanders stated that the comments were a joke made to illustrate a point about individuals who benefit financially from negative reporting on him.
Christopher Neely, a longtime associate and videographer for Sanders, initially brought up the topic during a livestream. Neely explained that Sanders jokingly offered $50,000 to some media members to not mention his name for a year, noting that no one accepted the fictitious deal.
Sanders confirmed on Tuesday that he would not offer money to journalists to stop reporting, calling the notion that he would pay someone $50,000 to stop talking about him a joke. He believes some people prosper off his name and brand without liking him.
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, became Colorado's head coach in 2023. The Buffaloes have since gone 18-26, with a 9-4 record in 2024 that included his son Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter. The team is currently 2-5 and 0-4 in the Big 12 Conference this year.
