Carlile's Penguins Dream Fulfilled

Defenseman Declan Carlile is living out a childhood dream after signing a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 11, 2026. The 26-year-old's family expressed excitement, not just for his professional success but also for the validation of their long-standing loyalty to the Penguins. Carlile's father, Kevin, originally from Ontario, and his mother, Tina, a U.S. Army veteran, met in Michigan and raised their sons in Hartland, Michigan.

Inspired by their father's Canadian roots and the proximity to Ontario Hockey League teams, the Carlile brothers developed a passion for hockey on their backyard rink. While they attended Detroit Red Wings games, their true allegiance lay with the Penguins, partly due to Sidney Crosby's iconic moments, including the 2009 Stanley Cup victory. Carlile's signing means he will now be teammates with Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Carlile spent five seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization, playing primarily for the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL. He credits the coaching staff in Tampa and Syracuse for fostering his development and building his confidence. An opportunity arose last season due to injuries on Tampa Bay's blue line, allowing Carlile to make his NHL debut and establish himself, impressing Pittsburgh's management.

Pittsburgh's President of Hockey Operations and GM, Kyle Dubas, noted Carlile's strong performance in helping Tampa Bay contend for a playoff spot, solidifying their belief in his potential contribution to the Penguins. Carlile aims to bring consistent physicality and defensive zone presence, coupled with offensive capabilities, to his new team, anticipating increased opportunities in Pittsburgh.
