Drivers Brace for Daytona Chaos: New Rules Unleashed
27 Aug
Summary
- Goodyear brings a proven track tire to Daytona, used in prior 2026 races.
- NASCAR introduces new rules, reducing spoiler and horsepower for more passing.
- Drivers express uncertainty about racing with the new package at Daytona.

Goodyear is bringing a well-established superspeedway tire package to the NASCAR Cup Series Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway this weekend. The left-side tire compound was first introduced in 2022, while the right-side compound debuted at the Daytona 500 earlier this year. This familiar setup provides teams with a solid baseline for the event.
In contrast, the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series will see a new right-side tire with an updated construction, though the compound remains the same. Goodyear's Director of Racing for the Americas, Justin Fantozzi, expressed confidence in their tire offerings for Daytona.
NASCAR is also introducing a revised rules package for the Cup Series race. To promote more passing, the rear spoiler height has been reduced from seven inches to four inches, and horsepower has been decreased from 510 to 465. These changes are intended to lessen drag and downforce.
The new regulations have created considerable anticipation and some apprehension among drivers. Joey Logano voiced uncertainty about how the racing will unfold, while Denny Hamlin predicted potential "absolute chaos" due to the unpredictable nature of the changes at Daytona.
