Cricket Australia's New Interim Chair: David Boon Steps Up
28 Sep
Summary
- David Boon appointed Interim Chair of Cricket Australia.
- Mike Baird steps down after six years on the board.
- BBL 'self-determination' model allows states to pursue private investment.

David Boon, a former Australian Test batsman, is stepping in as the Interim Chair of Cricket Australia (CA). This transition follows Mike Baird's notification to the CA Board of his intention to stand down after the upcoming Annual General Meeting.
Baird, who has served on the CA Board for six years and as Chair since February 2023, expressed his confidence in Boon and CA CEO Todd Greenberg. He highlighted the board's experience and passion for the game.
Boon's appointment occurs during a crucial period for Cricket Australia, which is addressing the financial structure of its competitions, particularly the Big Bash League (BBL). The CA Board recently approved a 'self-determination' model, enabling individual states to opt for private investment in their BBL clubs, a decision that has already seen the Melbourne Renegades' sale.
This new model has faced reservations, with Cricket NSW publicly rejecting the move, citing a lack of alignment and potential negative impacts on NSW cricket. A formal process to select a permanent CA Chair will commence after the AGM on October 28.
Boon stated his honour in taking the role and looks forward to leading the board in decisions that promote the game's prosperity and advance Australia's global interests in cricket.
