24 Jan
Summary
- Cycling program saved NHS over £13 million.
- British Cycling seeks £30 million for expansion.
- Scheme supports over 150 community cycling facilities.

The "Places to Ride" program, initiated in 2019, has demonstrated significant public health benefits, with British Cycling reporting that it has saved the NHS over £13.1 million. These savings are attributed to a reduction in chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. The scheme has successfully supported the creation of more than 150 cycling facilities nationwide.
British Cycling is now advocating for a further £30 million investment from the government. This funding would facilitate the establishment of an additional 250 community cycling spaces. The organization believes such investment is crucial, especially with major cycling events like the Tour de France coming to the UK in 2027, to stimulate enthusiasm and support for cycling at a grassroots level.
Several London-based projects have already benefited from the program, including the Sutton BMX track which received £9,000 in 2022 and generated an estimated £172,000 in social value. Other London initiatives in Hackney, Herne Hill, and Brixton have also received grants. Experts emphasize that accessible and safe cycling facilities are vital for encouraging participation, particularly among beginners and children.
